\u201cWe are a strong continent. We need to strengthen ourselves more,\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n
Barrot described Greenland as \u201cEuropean territory\u201d. Greenland is associated with the European Union through Denmark, of which it is a self-governing territory.<\/p>\n
In a rambling news conference on Tuesday, Trump refused to rule out military intervention over the Panama Canal and Greenland, both of which he has said he wants the United States to control.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need Greenland for national security purposes,\u201d\u00a0he declared.<\/p>\n
His comments coincided with a private visit by his son Donald Trump Jr. to the mineral- and oil-rich autonomous Danish territory on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you ask me: \u2018is the United States going to invade Greenland?\u2019 the answer is no,\u201d said Barrot.<\/p>\n
But he added: \u201cWe have entered an era that is seeing the return of the law of the strongest.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShould we be intimidated? Should we be overcome with worry? Evidently, no.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to wake up and reinforce ourselves, militarily, in competition, in a world where the law of the strongest prevails.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barrot said he believed that the United States is \u201cinherently not imperialistic\u201d and said he \u201cdid not believe\u201d that it is changing.<\/p>\n
At the news conference, Trump called the border with the United States\u2019 northern neighbor Canada an \u201cartificially drawn line\u201d and promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d<\/p>\n
