Secretary of State\u00a0Marco Rubio\u00a0said during an interview that\u00a0President Trump\u2019s\u00a0wish to acquire\u00a0the Arctic island Greenland is serious and rooted in national security concerns for both the rest of the world and the U.S. amid China\u2019s interest in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBut this is not a joke, like what he\u2019s saying is pretty accurate. People have been talking about it for years. This is not about acquiring land for the purpose of acquiring land. This is in our national interest, and it needs to be solved,\u201d Rubio said during his Thursday interview with SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly. \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s put out there what he intends to do, which is to purchase it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rubio asserted while China does not have a heavy Arctic presence, it is \u201crealistic\u201d to believe that Beijing would \u201cinstall facilities that give them access to the Arctic with the cover of a Chinese company, but that in reality, to serve a dual purpose, that in a moment of conflict, they could send naval vessels to that facility and operate from there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In recent months, Trump has expressed interest privately and publicly in acquiring Greenland. He said previously that Denmark would eventually \u201ccome along\u201d with the potential sale of the planet\u2019s largest island, which is rich in rare minerals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be Danes,\u201d Greenlandic Prime Minister M\u00fate Egede previously said on Fox News. \u201cWe don\u2019t even want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.\u201d<\/p>\n
Danish Prime Minister\u00a0Mette Frederiksen\u00a0had a \u201cfiery\u201d call\u00a0with Trump on Jan. 15 that devolved into a confrontation as the two discussed the president\u2019s desire to buy the island.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI wasn\u2019t privy to that phone call, but I imagine the phone call went the way a lot of these phone calls go, and that is, he just speaks bluntly and frankly with people,\u201d Rubio said on Thursday. \u201cAnd ultimately, I think diplomacy, in many cases, works better when you\u2019re straightforward, as opposed to using platitudes and language that translates to nothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rubio also said that if Greenland would come under assault by China, Denmark would not be able to deter the East Asian country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDenmark can\u2019t stop them. They would rely on the United States to do so,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cAnd so his point is, if the United States is on the hook to provide as we are now, we have a defense agreement with them to protect Greenland, if it comes under assault, if we\u2019re already on the hook for having to do that, then we might as well have more control over what happens there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
This week, Denmark announced that\u00a0it would bolster defense spending\u00a0for the Arctic island with a $2 billion security package that contains long-range drones and new Arctic ships.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
