Saudi Arabia has condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s suggestion that the kingdom\u2019s land be used to establish a Palestinian state, Al Jazeera reported.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Sunday, the Saudi Foreign Ministry accused Netanyahu of attempting to \u201cdivert attention\u201d from Israel\u2019s ongoing \u201ccrimes\u201d in Gaza, including \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe kingdom affirms that the Palestinian people have a right to their land, and they are not intruders or immigrants to it who can be expelled whenever the brutal Israeli occupation wishes,\u201d said the Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Netanyahu responded to an interviewer on Israel\u2019s Channel 14 who misspoke by saying \u201cSaudi state\u201d instead of \u201cPalestinian state\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Saudis can create a Palestinian state in Saudi Arabia; they have a lot of land over there,\u201d Netanyahu said.<\/p>\n
The interviewer replied that it was an idea worth exploring.<\/p>\n
The exchange drew angry reactions from Arab states, including Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq, as well as the six-nation Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).<\/p>\n
\u201cThese dangerous and irresponsible statements confirm the approach of the Israeli occupation forces in their disrespect for international and UN laws and treaties and the sovereignty of states,\u201d said GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi.<\/p>\n
The Saudi Foreign Ministry thanked the \u201cbrotherly countries\u201d for denouncing Netanyahu\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n
Discussions of the fate of Palestinians in Gaza had already been upended by an earlier shock proposal from United States President Donald Trump for the US to \u201ctake over\u201d and \u201cown\u201d Gaza, resettling Palestinians elsewhere in a move that would amount to ethnic cleansing. That suggestion, amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, has also been roundly condemned by Arab leaders.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
