{"id":5034,"date":"2024-11-05T16:42:01","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T13:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.hamsonews.com\/israeli-settlers-torch-palestinian-homes-cars-and-olive-trees-across-the-west-bank\/"},"modified":"2024-11-05T16:42:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T13:12:01","slug":"israeli-settlers-torch-palestinian-homes-cars-and-olive-trees-across-the-west-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamsonews.com\/en\/israeli-settlers-torch-palestinian-homes-cars-and-olive-trees-across-the-west-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli settlers torch Palestinian homes, cars and olive trees across the West Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.tehrantimes.com\/d\/t\/2024\/11\/05\/4\/5237248.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p class=\"summary\">Armed\u00a0Israeli\u00a0settlers launched a wave of attacks on\u00a0Palestinian\u00a0properties in several areas of the\u00a0occupied\u00a0West Bank\u00a0overnight, torching homes, vehicles and olive trees.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 vehicles were targeted in the central\u00a0West Bank\u00a0city of al-Bireh on Sunday night, in what has been described online as a &#8220;pogrom&#8221;, with most set ablaze and left smoldering wrecks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Video footage posted online showed Palestinians attempting to put out fires enveloping buildings and cars, and\u00a0roads left charred the morning after.<\/p>\n<p>According to local news agency Wafa, the settlers\u00a0opened fire\u00a0at\u00a0civil defense search-and-rescue workers attempting to extinguish the flames.<\/p>\n<p>Settlers later set fire to a parking lot and scrawled offensive graffiti on walls in the nearby\u00a0town of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah, before fleeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed Amr, a resident of the area, told Middle East Eye that he woke up at 3.15 am to odd\u00a0noises near the building where he lives. Looking out the window, he saw a group of people pouring\u00a0flammable material and burning vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><cite class=\"quote-t7\">Wave of attacks on towns and villages begins on Sunday night, with residents of Burqa noting Israelis destroyed ancient trees that were older than Israel itself<\/cite><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe settlers infiltrated from the Beit El settlement and came through the military checkpoint that separates it from the city of al-Bireh. Then they walked through the agricultural lands to reach the buildings adjacent to it, where I saw at least eight to ten settlers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Amr, the settlers attempted to storm a home, but Palestinian residents gathered to prevent them, so they withdrew to Beit El. &#8220;Our situation is like all Palestinian cities that are exposed to settler terrorism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Bireh Mayor Robin al-Khatib described the event as dangerous, especially since it is the first time that such a large number of vehicles was burned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrival of settlers to residential buildings and burning their surroundings is a dangerous indicator of the possibility of them reaching the heart of al-Bireh or Ramallah and carrying out larger attacks,\u201d he told MEE.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian foreign ministry\u00a0condemned\u00a0the attack. In a post on X it blamed the &#8220;protection and immunity granted by the Israeli political leadership&#8221; and the &#8220;international failure to halt genocide&#8221; in Gaza for the aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas called for\u00a0escalation\u00a0against settlers, saying Palestinians should confront them\u00a0with &#8220;all means of resistance&#8221; following the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Settler attacks\u00a0continued into Monday morning and were reported across the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olive groves attacked<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0clip\u00a0circulating online showed confrontations between settlers and Palestinians in the town of Burqa, northwest of Nablus.<\/p>\n<p>A man in the video describes how Israelis burnt Palestinian land, olive trees and two houses, and said someone had been kidnapped by the settlers. Middle East Eye has been unable to confirm the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmoud Motan, a resident of Burqa, told MEE that a major settler attack targeted the village from three directions.\u00a0He said they torched dozens of olive trees, which he noted were hundreds of years old and therefore older than Israel itself.<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"quote-t7\"><strong>Settlers don\u2019t enter the Palestinian areas without the cover of the Israeli army<\/strong><\/cite><\/p>\n<p>Several Palestinians who tried to confront the attack were beaten by settlers and were wounded by rocks they threw.<\/p>\n<p>Armed settlers also obstructed firemen from accessing the\u00a0burning agricultural lands, causing the flames to spread widely.<\/p>\n<p>An hour into the attack, the Israeli army stormed the village\u00a0and arrested two young Palestinians under the pretext of confronting the settler attack.<\/p>\n<p>In Qusra, south of Nablus, settlers flooded in under the protection of Israeli soldiers, forcing Palestinian inhabitants to leave and preventing farmers from picking olives, Wafa reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The olive harvest season in the West Bank has been subject to repeated attacks by settlers and Israeli forces. Several areas of Hebron have witnessed\u00a0raids and attacks\u00a0on olive pickers, with one case of attempted burglary of a car reported in Yatta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the attack on al-Bireh, the Israeli army stormed the area and raided several homes, including Amr&#8217;s house, and confiscated surveillance recordings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe army is trying to show us that it will investigate, but as with all attacks against Palestinians, nothing happens.
