\u201cFrance condemns the recent remarks of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in favor of the annexation of the West Bank by Israel,\u201d the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement, according to Anadolu Agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It recalled that those remarks were \u201cagainst international law and the efforts that aim a de-escalation of the regional tensions.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Monday, Smotrich said he instructed Israel\u2019s Settlement Division and Civil Administration to initiate the groundwork for infrastructure to \u201capply sovereignty\u201d in the West Bank.<\/p>\n
The ministry stressed France\u2019s commitment to the implementation of \u201cthe two-state solution\u201d for Israel and Palestine to live \u201cin peace and security,\u201d and noted that this would be the \u201conly\u201d way to a \u201cjust and durable\u201d solution.<\/p>\n
This June, the far-right politician confirmed reports from The New York Times that he had a \u201csecret plan\u201d to annex the West Bank and thwart any efforts to incorporate it into a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n
In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark opinion that declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land \u201cillegal\u201d and demanded the evacuation of all existing settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
