{"id":969,"date":"2024-10-14T15:09:14","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T11:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.hamsonews.com\/rural-women-agents-of-change\/"},"modified":"2024-10-14T15:09:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T11:39:14","slug":"rural-women-agents-of-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamsonews.com\/en\/rural-women-agents-of-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Rural women \u2018agents of change\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.tehrantimes.com\/d\/t\/2024\/10\/14\/4\/5205765.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p class=\"summary\">TEHRAN \u2013 Observed annually on October 15, International Day of Rural Women highlights rural women\u2019s critical role in food production, environmental conservation, and sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The day also raises awareness of women\u2019s role in rural areas and the unique challenges they face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women are responsible for\u00a0half of the world\u2019s food production\u00a0while working as\u00a0environmental and biodiversity stewards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0farmers, women have learned how to cope with and adapt to climate change, for example, by practicing sustainable agriculture in harmony with nature, switching to drought-resistant seeds, employing low-impact or organic soil management techniques, or leading community-based reforestation and restoration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Given their position on the frontlines of the climate crisis, women are uniquely situated to be agents of change \u2014 to help find ways to mitigate the causes of global warming and adapt to its impacts on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving gender equality and empowering women is not only the right thing to do but is a critical ingredient in the fight against extreme poverty, hunger, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous women\u00a0have been at the forefront of environmental conservation by bringing invaluable ancestral knowledge and practices, and rural women have been\u00a0leading global and national climate movements\u00a0that have spotlighted the need for action for the sake of this and future generations.<\/p>\n<p>However, reports prove that climate change has a more pronounced impact on women, primarily indigenous and peasant women, whose agricultural dependence, living conditions, and marginalization expose them to a greater degree of changes due to climate, loss of diversity, and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>This year, International Day of Rural Women&#8217;s theme is \u2018Rural Women Sustaining Nature for Our Collective Future: Building climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, and caring for land towards gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s promote their work as food providers and protectors of the environment. Let\u2019s demand their participation in decision-making within their communities.
